The Oracle

Working together for a greener planet.

We're all doing our bit.

The Oracle is home to over 115 retailers and each of them do all they can to ensure we stay as green as possible. Below, you'll find a selection of our retailers and what they're doing to help protect the environment we live and shop in.

The Pier - Holybrook Walk

The Pier - Holybrook Walk

At The Pier, we make every effort to conserve the environment. We buy our products ethically, so you're assured no child labour is involved and insist a fair wage is paid for their manufacture. All our wooden furniture is made from Forest Steward Council wood or other renewable sources. And we make absolutely sure, that every scrap of packaging is recycled.

Parchment - Upper Mall

Parchment - Upper Mall

Here at Parchment, we're very proud of our "Remarkable" range of recycled stationary, which goes to show just what can be done to give a second lease of life to the everyday materials we use. There's our "I used to be a cardboard box" notepad, for example. In addition, we insist all our bags are biodegradable or paper.

Debenhams

Debenhams

Being green is a high priority at Debenhams. That's why we recycle as much as possible. From paper and cardboard, to glass and carrier bags. We even recycle the oil from our restaurants to make bio-fuels. And of course, the products we sell, give the environment a helping hand, too. There's Baby Rocha 100% organic cotton for kids, our 100% recycled glass range, delicious Green and Blacks organic chocolate and many more. And you can buy all those things under the glow of A/B energy efficient light bulbs.

Lush - Upper Mall

Lush - Upper Mall

We make all our products from fresh fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils, safe synthetics and absolutely no animal ingredients. We believe in only buying from companies who test for safety without using animals, and who, in fact, test on humans. We keep our packaging to a minimum. And because Lush is a vegetarian brand, 68% of our products are suitable for vegans. In addition, we've won numerous awards for our green credentials. Put simply, we work to help protect the environment in every way we can.

Coffee Republic - Broad Street

Coffee Republic - Broad Street

Naturally, we're in the business of selling coffee. We're also in the business of making 100% sure that the coffee we sell is bought from ethical resources and is Fair Trade Produce. So everyone, from the people who pick the beans, to those who sip their morning espresso can do so happily. And it goes without saying that our freshly made sandwiches can be enjoyed from recycled packaging.

Pret-a-Manger - Broad Street Entrance

Pret-a-Manger - Broad Street Entrance

Sustainability is important to us here at Pret. That's why we're always looking at ways in which we can help protect the world around us. Of course, all our packaging is recycled but we go further than that. From July 2008 we're launching a customer recycling scheme in our shops. We're proud of the food we sell and ensure we have a thorough knowledge of all our ingredients and products. Where our food comes from, how it's farmed, reared, harvested, produced and delivered is important to us. We want to know everything about it before it comes to you. Only then are we happy that we're doing what's right for the environment and those who live in it.

Disney Store - Lower Mall

Disney Store - Lower Mall

Welcome to the magical world of Disney. And it's a sustainable one too. We recycle every piece of plastic and cardboard that goes through our business. And to reduce our carbon footprint, it's all carried out in the UK - not overseas to cut costs. In fact, we recycle approx 1,000 tonnes a year. All our carrier bags are made from 30% recycled material and of course, are recyclable themselves. We're also working to introduce more organic products in our stores, whilst lowering emissions at our distribution centre.

GAME - Lower Mall

GAME - Lower Mall

As a responsible retailer, all GAME's carrier bags are 100% degradable. Although the bags look no different from ordinary carrier bags, they actually contain an additive called TDPA (Totally Degradable Plastic Additives). This allows the carrier bag to totally degrade when exposed to sunlight or heat, without compromising the strength of the carrier bag. Our carrier bags will degrade within two years and will last for three years in storage. That makes our bags more environmentally friendly than standard plastic bags that take up to 400 years to degrade at landfill. Think about that, the next time you buy a game from us.

New Look - Upper Mall

New Look - Upper Mall

We're striving to reduce the environmental impact of our business. And we realise that's a gradual process. With cotton and cotton mix fabrics being so popular we look to source organic cotton that's grown without the use of pesticides so it's easier on the environment. And now, we're researching fabrics created from the world's natural resources. This includes garments made from bamboo and even a fleece made from plastic bottles.

Build-a-Bear Workshop - Upper Mall

Build-a-Bear Workshop - Upper Mall

At Build-a-Bear Workshop, we think it's important to build a more environmentally aware world. That's why all our signage and every piece of collateral we produce is only printed on Forest Steward Council paper. And our commitment to the environment doesn't end there. We're currently in the process of moving away from using plastic packaging. In fact, we're doing all we can to make our business more environmentally huggable, all round.

Essential - Upper Mall

Essential - Upper Mall

When you buy a piece of our jewellery, we know that presentation is important. We also know that it has an impact on the environment. That's why we offer our customers the choice of having their purchase wrapped in acid-free tissue paper. Or, if a purchase is under £14.99, there is a small charge made for a presentation box (which is biodegradable). In addition, our bags - about half a million per year - are degradable and break down after about 12-18 months. In short, we have always used the same principles - reducing needless waste wherever possible.

The Body Shop - The Upper Mall

The Body Shop - The Upper Mall

Inspired by nature, driven by passion; that's our company ethos. So from the raw natural ingredients that we use in our products to the way we run our business, we believe we can help protect the environment and support sustainable development.

We promote the use of renewable resources and sustainable raw ingredients, supporting sustainable wood through the use of Forest Stewardship Council certified wood products. We also strive to minimise waste and the unnecessary use of excess packaging on our products. Plus, we use renewable energy and are planting trees to absorb the carbon we produce. What's more, we have committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2010.

House of Fraser

House of Fraser

At House Fraser, we recognise the impact that all businesses have on the environment. As a responsible retailer who thinks seriously about the future of our planet, we are constantly reviewing all our policies in order to minimise our impact on the world around us. We work towards these goals in a variety of ways - from our Fairtrade policies to ethical sourcing and from sustainability to the use of organic materials in our business. And we're constantly searching for new ways to ensure ours is a very green house.
