Top Tip: (Source: www.biggreenswitch.co.uk)

  • Don't leave appliances on standby. Gadgets left on standby are responsible for 4m tonnes of excess carbon dioxide each year. It's estimated that a UK household could save £37 per year on electricity bills if they always fully switched home appliances off rather than leaving them on standby.
  • Only boil as much water as you need. Most people don't look at the volume indicator on the side of their kettle, often resulting in them boiling far more water than they actually need. Referring to this measure can help you to accurately determine the amount of liquid necessary.

Kids go green

10 top tips for recycling at school
(Source: www.biggreenswitch.co.uk)

  • Be paper-conscious within your school
It’s important to make sure you are getting the best out of all the paper materials in your school. Ensure writing paper is being used on both sides. Put used paper to good use in other areas of the school, and if you can't think of anything else to do with the paper, make sure it goes into a recycling bin instead of being thrown in with the main rubbish and sent straight to landfill.
  • Encourage pupils and parents to cut out individual school runs
Try to encourage everyone to think about different ways to get to and from school each day. Consider promoting walking or cycling at your school, or try to persuade more of you to use public transport or become involved in a local car share scheme. You may want to have an ‘Environment Week’ to get everyone reflecting on how they can cut carbon emissions by changing their daily transport plans.
  • Collect and recycle litter
Addressing the issue of litter around your school can lead to a more appealing environment for all concerned and help to return suitable waste for recycling. Ensure you use facilities available to you like recycling bins. Why not set a school-wide challenge to see how many recyclable materials can be collected over a term?
